A1.1 Matched Development Investment Funding
Type: Investment
Funds Available: Up to $25,000 (per application)
Assessed: By panel
Purpose and Scope:
ScreenWest assists with the development of quality film and television projects intended for production in Western Australia. It does so by providing financial support for well-conceived projects with market potential, which have a strong likelihood of being produced.
ScreenWest's main objective is to develop and sustain the local production industry.
Due to the competitive nature and finite funds available under the matched development funding scheme, only resident Western Australian production companies or WA resident filmmakers as defined in the General Guidelines are eligible to apply for matched development funding.
Television drama production (including children's, animated and primetime series), low-budget features and telemovies, and factual programs (primarily documentaries) are eligible to apply. Higher budget features will only be considered for development if they demonstrate exceptional cultural or economic benefits to the State. Due to financial constraints, ScreenWest is currently unable to fund New Media projects per se, although television projects with a multi-platform component are encouraged.
ScreenWest will generally only consider projects for one stage of development at a time, and support is not guaranteed for each successive stage of development. ScreenWest appreciates that some projects, particularly drama, have a better prospect of success if they have sustained and continued development support over a number of drafts. Ongoing development with ScreenWest is generally only supported where strong interest from a broadcaster and /or a distributor can be demonstrated.
Where a project intended to be produced by a Western Australian-resident company or individual receives project development funding from a nationally or internationally recognised broadcaster or distributor, ScreenWest will match this funding provided the Producer presents a suitable letter of agreement from the broadcaster/distributor and a suitable development plan and budget. Matched funding will be seen as investment in the project should it go into production. All applications are subject to ScreenWest funds being available.
Matched funding will be limited to a maximum of $25,000 per application, with a production company limit of $50,000 per financial year. Each project is considered on a case by case basis by ScreenWest Management and applications can be submitted at anytime.
Eligibility:
Projects will be assessed on:
- The quality of the idea;
- Whether the project has attracted a producer and director;
- The ability and/or track record of the writer and team;
- Market potential or interest and likely audience appeal;
- The likely chance of the project being realized in WA (e.g. in terms of budget, locations, etc);
- Potential benefits to the WA Industry.
New writers without a track record or credits must submit a completed first draft before they can be considered for funding. Experienced writers with a strong track record of completed work and/or production credits will be considered for first draft funding, but would be required to submit a full treatment (approx. 10 to 25 pages) for assessment.
All applicants must meet the WA residency criteria as outlined in the General Guidelines.
How to Apply:
All applications must include:
- A completed Application Form, including a Development Budget;
- A one page detailed synopsis;
- The latest draft script or full treatment;
- An extended outline or preliminary treatment (in the case of documentaries);
- A clear development strategy outlining the objectives and tasks to be undertaken (e.g. writers' notes on the direction of the next draft). If applying for Emergency Funding a clear rationale for why the project should be considered under Emergency Funding Guidelines;
- CVs of the project principals and, if applicable, a company profile indicating past success in producing and pre-marketing projects;
- Letters of intent or other documentation giving proof of market place interest. If applying under Matched Development Investment Guidelines, proof of broadcaster or distributor funding must be provided;
- A marketing/production financing strategy.
