A3.5 Low Budget Features - West Coast Visions

Type: Investment
Funds Available: $750,000 for one film
Assessed: By panel

Purpose and Scope:

As part of WA on Screen and ScreenWest's commitment to creating a drama pathway for Western Australian creative teams, ScreenWest invests $750,000 in one low budget feature film each year under the West Coast Visions initiative.

West Coast Visions supports talented and motivated writer/director/producer teams with distinctive visions who can best utilize this initiative to fulfill their professional potential. As West Coast Visions is designed to uncover, inspire and develop local projects and skills, it will be expected that the shoot and post-production occur in Western Australia.

To be competitive, applicants need a well-developed, budget-savvy project that explores contemporary ideas in inventive, challenging and unique ways.

Eligibility:

The selection process will have a strong preference for Western Australian scripts, key creatives, crew and cast. Three of the four core creative roles (writer, director, editor and cinematographer) must be WA residents. Producers and projects can originate from anywhere in the nation but projects with producers from outside WA will need to comply with the core creative role criteria specified above, and also be co-produced with an established WA production company.

The successful feature film or telemovie will be produced on a budget of $750,000 and above. Under the revised guidelines for West Coast Visions there is no cap on the budget - provided the producer can show firm evidence of how the balance of funding and investment will be raised. Written confirmation of this market interest will need to be provided with the application.

The film can be shot on film, HD or video and can explore any genre or period, as long as the budget credibly reflects these choices.

How to Apply:

Producers or teams will need to supply - at a minimum:

  • General Application Form
  • An introductory cover letter
  • Synopsis page
  • Final (or near-final) draft screenplay (hard copy)
  • A preliminary one page budget summary
  • Strong support notes from key creatives
  • CVs of key creatives
  • A provisional shooting schedule

Any distributor/broadcaster interest/sales arrangements already in place should also be submitted.

Please submit your application UNBOUND (please do not use staples or binders as all material will be photocopied).

A panel, consisting of prominent industry and ScreenWest representatives, will shortlist finalists and the selected applicants will be invited to outline their ultimate vision for the project as a creative team. Each team will be expected to have evolved a practical and thematic approach to the realisation of the story within their budget which, if short-listed, they will be invited to present at the interview stage.

ScreenWest will work with the production team to provide ongoing support throughout the further development, production and delivery of the final work. The successful film is expected to be completed and delivered within one year.

Although it is expected that the chosen West Coast Visions project will be fully funded to completion, it is at the discretion of ScreenWest whether any project is selected or if one project, or more, is supported to go into production.

(See the General Guidelines Section 1 for Western Australian Residency definitions).

Applicants are strongly advised to contact ScreenWest Project Manager Drama and Development Victor Gentile (Ph: 9224 7352) for a detailed discussion of their project before making a formal application.

These guidelines must be read in conjunction with the General Guidelines.
